New To Club and Have Questions?

General Info for new to club players and parents

  • About Club Volleyball in General:
    • Club Volleyball operates under the governing body of USAV and the Lone Star Region (the lone star region includes san antonio, new braunfels, san marcos, austin,  houston, and the surrounding areas).
    • Club teams participate in Sanctioned USAV Tournaments and play against other Club Teams (probably 30-40 club teams in san antonio alone)
    • Club Size-while there are a couple of clubs in san antonio that carry 30+ teams, most clubs carry between 5-10 teams (we carry 15-22 on average).
    • Club Fees-fees vary by club and type of team.  There are a lot of factors that affect pricing and some include the size of the club, the type of tournaments the team participates in (some tournaments are 3 to 4x times the price of others), does the club have their own facility and/or provide additional training outside of the club practice, coaching staff, number of practice days a week, etc.
    • Types of Teams:
      • National teams are the most expensive.  These team usually travel out of state and participate in more out of town tournaments (i.e. houston, dallas, etc) than regional or local teams.  National teams can practice around 6-8 hours a week.  Athletes on national teams usually have several years of experience and most athletes put in an additional 4-6 hours of player development/training each week outside of the club practice.
      • Regional-middle of the road pricing.  These teams can participate in both local and regional tournaments, and practice 3-5 hours a week.  Athletes on regional teams may be newer to club, have some club experience, and/or do not want the extra cost associated with out of state travel.  Players on regional teams are encouraged to put in another 2-3 hours of personal training/development each week outside of their club practice.
      • Local-are the least expensive option for parents.  The fees are lower because teams usually play in fewer tournaments than a regional or national team, the team plays in local/less expensive tournaments,  practice less often than the regional and national teams, and may receive less team gear.  The amount of practice time varies by club but can average 2-4 hours a week and often times the team will not practice the day after a tournament (i.e. if the teams participates in a tournament on saturday, they will probably not practice on sunday).  Less practice time or gym space during the season allows for the club to keep the cost/fees lower).   Athletes on local teams often participate in other sports and/or as focused on academics as they are athletics, or are not ready to commit to the time required for a national or regional team.  Players may or may not put in extra hours of training/development outside of the club practice due to other activities.
    • Tournaments-teams can play locally (in or around San Antonio), within the State of Texas (usually Austin, Houston, or Dallas), or participate in tournaments outside of Texas (Denver, Orlando, Reno, Vegas, Chicago, etc).
    • Club Season runs from approx Dec 1st 2022-May 1st 2023.  National teams usually start in mid november while regional and local teams start in early december.
    • Try outs-can be the most confusing thing about club for players/parents new to club.  Although the club season doesn't usually start until late November or early December, most clubs hold try outs in June,  July or August (there are several reasons why this happens to include time for uniform fittings and ordering of uniforms/team gear, registration of players with usav,  registration of teams in sanctioned tournaments, and to allow parents the opportunity to spread out the club fees in smaller payments over several months).
